- In the essay, Turkle speaks about her view on conversation. Conversation is two or more people talking to each other and actually thinking about what they are saying. When Turkle describes conversation, she does not only see talking, she sees relationships being built. When in a conversation there are things you should do for it to be successful. For starters, you should always pay attention to the other person. You should also always be thoughtful with what you say and know what you should and should not say.
- Within the essay, Turkle brings up her views on technology. In her opinion, she sees technology as something that interferes with conversation. In my opinion, I think that she is both right and wrong. I agree with her when she says that it hurts face to face conversation and the skills you need for those conversations to be successful. I also disagree with her because with technology it is a lot easier to conversate with people. Even though it may not be face to face, it is still a way of having conversations with each other.
2) According to Marion-Webster, empathy is “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner” (“Empathy). To me, I see this as conversations being an extremely good way to show empathy and the easiest way to see when empathy is needed. Empathy also means “the imaginative projection of a subjective state into an object so that the object appears to be infused with in” (Empathy).

My Son the Prince of Fashion Qs
Critical Reading
- While growing up Abe faces some bullying from his peers because of his sense of style. Looking back through the essay, identify passages where Chabon indicates why Abe continued to pursue his unique style despite the teasing he faced. What did fashion offer Abe? Why was it worth so much to him?
Chabon indicates that Abe kept pursuing his unique style because he liked the attention, even if it was negative. He also wanted to look different from the other boys in school who all dressed similarly. Fashion offered Abe a way to feel different and express himself. It was worth so much to him to dress uniquely because it allowed him to be who he really was, not what he was supposed to look like during this time.
Assignments for Writing
- Issues of identity and community are at the heart of Chabon’s narrative. Write a paper in which you use his text to analyze the ways in which self-representation (through clothes or other means) can be used to form an identity and connect to a community. You may find part of your response to Question 1 of Questions for Critical Reading helpful as you make your argument
Throughout the paper, Chabon shows how Abe identifies. Abe represents himself as someone who is not scared to dress how he really wants to. By dressing this way, it helps him connect with a community and helps him become a part of something he really enjoys. He becomes a clothes designer all because he wasn’t scared to do something different and identify with a group that not a lot of people are apart of.
3. In Question 3 of Questions for Critical Reading you explored notions of manhood.
Expand on your response by writing a paper determining the ways in which Chabon’s
essay illustrates changing cultural notions of what it means to be a man.
Throughout Chabon’s piece, you can easily tell he is trying to influence the reader. He wants to influence the reader to believe that the old definition of “being a man” is outdated. In his piece he believes that being a man is being a male person who is brave enough to stand out and be who they are. In this case, Abe was the man that wasn’t afraid to show off who he was and be who he really is, not what society wants him to be.
They Say I Say
Ex. 2
After reading Nowinski’s passage I have come to the conclusion that I disagree with his viewpoint. I disagree because his stats are from the last decade which means it would have had to of been data coming from an adult that played football many years before that. Since that adult played youth football, there have been many advances. One of these advances is that the helmets and other equipment has become a lot more protective to help prevent head injuries. Also, in youth football, different tackling forms are being used too.
